. Deltans Send SOS to Sherrif Oborevwori Over Flooding
By Jude I Ojiugo-Onochie
Flooding is becoming a perennial problem that the Country (Nigeria) is currently exposed to, and apart of that alot of lives and properties have been lost to the flooding menace.
One of the greatest flooding, the Country has ever faced in history was the one of 2012, where it was alleged that Lagdo Dam at Camerroun was filled to its brim and opened.
At that time, Nigeria suffered the brunt of that river Lagdo Dam opening, so many States affected, houses, properties, farmslands, fish ponds and lives were lost, though NEMA tried its best in partnership with various states government to address the menace.
If its effort to avert the devastating effect that the flooding will have on the citizens, NEMA in collaboration with states SEMA and Ministries of Environment embarked on Advocacy, enlightenment and warning of the citizens to refrain from putting structures on water ways, so as to allow free flow of movement of flooding.
Though the warnings have to some extent been heeded, alot of damaged were done .
A lot just that , even the presidency , UN and other Organs sustain their advocacy to some extent, that has yielded the necessary result.
In Delta here, the flooding issues during rains are always awful and torrid owing to the fact that the citizens pass through difficult times to access their destinations.
In Asaba, Delta State Capital the situation is pathetic as virtually all villages and quarters in (Ime Ogbe) i.e. (Inland Town) are affected by the flooding. In Okowa’s administration, efforts put in by his administration to address flooding challenges had not yielded the necessary result.
The reasons for such are that the Construction Companies handling such projects are carrying out their jobs at a very low pace, which is a source of concern to all, and that is not commendable at all.
Presently, at this rainning periods, the citizens are suffering over flooding and there is every reasons for for government to act.
Sherrif Oborevwori’s administration, having learnt from the past, should call the Construction Companies handling flood control projects, to up their performances so as to save lives and properties across the State.
