By Jude I Ojiugo-Onochie
The Citizens of the state should as matter of fact assist the state government by ensuring that one should desist from improper waste disposals, dump there waste at designated areas so that the officials of the waste management and approved private Agencies for waste removals can go to such places, evacuate the refuse and take them to approved dump sites.
The State Ministry of Environment, and that of Health should from time to time go around the state, and sensitize the citizens on the need to always maintain clean and healthy environment.
The state government should give up with stringent laws which prohibits indiscriminate waste disposals and recommend punishment for offenders.
Good healthy living should be imbibed by all residents in the state, so that their life span and longevity can be guaranteed at all times.
Refuse globally, has serious health challenges, if not well managed, as it poses severe threat to the ecosystem Environment which Human Beings Co-habit.
In Delta State for instance, there are 25 local government Councils, and Asaba being the state capital, the way and manner refuse litter the state capital and environs, is a source of concern to all. Not just littering the state capital with such refuses, but the non-chalant and uncalled attitude the persons responsible for that, do it is most painful.
Ideally, the state government, has a ministry, that is, ministry of Environment whose duty is to see that the entire state is kept clean and the ecosystem enjoys neatness and waste free atmosphere.
To assist the ministry realise it’s objectives of doing that, the Delta State Waste Management, is set up as an Agency in the ministry of Environment to among other things, assist in waste removal / disposal, drains and gutters, are properly drained and kept neat.
There are a lot of airborne diseases, which arises from waste/ and refuse, not properly managed.
