Keke Operators Still GroaningI Over Excessive Burden of Taxation

Reliable sources close to Delta State Tax justice and Good Governance Platform, indicate that Operators of Keke, the popular vehicle for inter-City transport in Asab, are still over-burdened with the problem of multiple taxation and undue harassment from various bodies , that include the police, Asaba Youth, as well as agents of the State and Oshimili South Council.
At a recent meeting of Delta State Tax justice and Good Governance Platform, which took place in the Delta State Capital on Monday 1st August, it was learnt that some Keke Operators in Asaba complained vehemently of continuing harassment and payment of multiple taxes, appealing to appropriate authorities to intervene and save them from quiting the business, which is their means of livelihood.
Established in 2015 to promote fair and just tax system in the State, Delta State Tax justice and Good Governance Platform has through its advocacy activities over the years, contributed in reducing the problem of excessive taxation, as well as harassment, and abuse of human rights perpetrated against traders and the operators in the informal sector.
The platform is sponsored by OXFAM-NOVIB and the Government of Netherlands, with Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) as facilitator.
The platform meeting in Asaba, on Monday 1st August was held at the instance of OXFAM-NOVIB.
It was held as part of the annual appraisal exercise of the branches of the platform in Nigeria by OXFAM-NOVIB.
